Three areas were selected during adorning of the wall. The first was the upper one. It was decorated with gypsum cornice. The second middle area was painted in black or red or colors imitated marble or stone. The third area was marked with skirting board or socle. It was yellow colored.
Definition “skirting board” is shrouded in interesting developments during “second style” time which have been also called “architectural style”. Roman painting had the innovation in decoration from 80 BC till 14 AD. Cornices, skirting boards and other axonometric details have been drawn with “optical illusion” effect. Drawn windows decorated interior. Bases with false columns were painted instead the skirting boards. Due to it the plenty of room seemed to have been. But the explosion of Vesuvius have finished the optical illusions of decoration. So the style wasn’t widespread out of Rome. And tradition of drawing the skirting boards didn’t substitute the use of real ones.
